I have yet to set up my strobes in 2011 because we have had snow, gray skies, and this window in our dinning room that has shutters.
I keep this plant stand nearby because it is the perfect height for letting light from the snow outside, which is like a big soft box, to fall on the subject at a low angle. I can use the open shutter as a bounce card, and control the strength of that light by opening or closing the slats.
So see—there is something to appreciate about our cold winters. Happy shooting!

Nice use of environmental tools... will definitely have to keep this in mind when shooting video...

Wow the end photo is absolutely stunning here - I'm very envious of the beautiful window full of natural light you have in your kitchen! Thanks so much for sharing the diptych of both the end result and the simple setup. Sometimes I become too dependent on additional lighting & strobes because of the "easy" controls and forget that natural light is always much more beautiful and often just as easy to control.

Thanks Terri—and yes, sometimes strobes are just easier. The natural light coming through a window is often too harsh. Bright overcast with snow is the best.
