For fans of Grant Achatz: I got an email from Grant, who was just in Manhattan for the Star Chefs conference, saying that doctors report that chemo had reduced the tumor in his tongue by 75%, which is really good news. Radiation, a serious body blow, begins soon. I can honestly say that I've never met a chef with more focus and drive in the kitchen. I know Grant will succeed here as he has succeeded in every endeavor he's set his mind do. All best wishes, Grant.

Thanks for the update, Michael. Continued good vibes and well wishes to Grant!

That's good news, I know everyone wishes him well and thanks for the update. I hate to ask but I'm ignorant of such things - is the radiation supposed to take care of the remaining 25%?
artnlit
PS. The radiation will indeed be tough; take it day by day and continue to focus on the pleasures of the kitchen...

Best wishes and a quick recovery to Chef Achatz.
BTW, will this affect his ability to taste?

Hang tough Grant Achatz, we're all pulling for you.

Chef, if you only knew how many people are in your corner and sending you good thoughts. Most of us don't even know you and probably never will. But we are out here...stay the course!

At first I was impressed beyond belief by Grant's food. Now I am doubly impressed by his fortitude and I join the rest of you in rooting for Grant's full recovery.

That's wonderful news. He's got the right mindset to triumph over cancer: one of the foremost things in licking it (er, no pun intended) is to be the kind of person who challenges rules and limitations. Grant's clearly got that quality in mega-spades, and I look forward to his recovery.

This is terrific news. Thanks for keeping us posted.

I'm sending him tumor shrinking vibes.
What a strong person to be going through what he is and still going full steam ahead with his work. I guess it helps to cope when you're busy doing something you love.

Michael,
Thanks for the update. As fiat lux said, there are so many people who are pulling for Chef - the Universe has got to be paying attention:-) My best wishes to you, Chef, as you continue to prevail over this.

To answer K's question above -
Yes, the chef is seeing someone.

Thanks for the update. We had a wonderful and memorable meal there in July where we were accorded a couple of extra courses after waxing eloquent on our Los Angeles laying hens for better pasta making.
I am a long term cancer survivor who had radiation to the jaw many years ago. Radiation to the mouth and jaw can cause a reduction of salvia. It's important to be on top of this for all sorts of reasons. There are now products out there to help with this but physicians sometimes fail to inform patients.

Advice for Grant .... after reading the article in people Magazine I hope you will review your life and see where it might be out of balance.Having been an oncology nurse for 10 years and support group leader The people who seem to "make it " and stay that way inevitably make major changes in their life . Use the food you prepare for healing and let go of the 17 hour work week and all the diet cokes.Your body is telling you something ..I hope you will listen ...

This is terrific, thanks for the update.

I am editor of a lifestyle magazine in Dubai. The magazine is a weekend glossy called Friday. We are bringing out a special magazine on food titled Flavours and we would love you (Michael Ruhlman) to be a big part of it. We would like you to talk of your new book, The Elements of Cooking, plus answer some questions on food, lifestyle, yourself, etc. We propose this to be a major article in Flavours and it would delight our readership which is a multiethnic mix of over 140 nationalities.
Since you have been called one of the best translators of the chef's craft to home cooks, we cannot think of a better person to be the anchor personality of this magazine. BTW, Flavours is a quarterly issued along with Friday, the region's highest selling English weekly. lifestyle magazine.
I would love to hear a yes from you.
Thank you in anticipation,
